A powerful earthquake occurred near Istanbul

The earthquake occurred on Wednesday, November 23, at 4:08 local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the earthquake will be determined as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations.

The National Observatory of Athens determined that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.0. Instead, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center estimated the magnitude at 5.9.

The earthquake was felt in many areas in northwestern and central Turkey. In particular, in Duzce (approx. – 170 km from Istanbul), Kocaeli, Alapla, Handek and Eregla.

The closest big city to the epicenter was Duzje – 17 km.

As of 4:00 Kyiv time – there is no information about the destruction and victims.

  • “I was lying in bed and suddenly I felt the room swaying. I heard some rattling and realized it was my clothes hangers”;
  • “At first I thought I was dizzy, but then I realized it was an earthquake.”
