The ratification of the applications of Finland and Sweden to join NATO is delayed. It must be approved by Hungary, a member of the Alliance, by mid-December 2022.

This is reported by the publication Politicowith reference to the statement of the Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister of the country Gergel Gulyash.

“The Government of Hungary supports the membership of Sweden and Finland in NATO and has submitted ratification documents to the National Assembly”– said Gulyash.

As noted, Hungary hopes that the accession of new countries to the defense alliance will make it stronger. Therefore, the expansion of NATO due to the inclusion of Finland and Sweden will be ratified no later than mid-December.

“Whether the expansion is in Hungary’s national security interests can be debated, but reportedly said it doesn’t matter right now.”– added the official.

It is worth noting that Hungary and Turkey are the only NATO countries that have not yet ratified Sweden and Finland joining the alliance, a process that began shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine in February. As the Prime Minister of Finland, Sanna Marin, said, she does not expect that Hungary and Turkey will block the expansion of NATO, but warned about the risks of delaying the accession.

It will be recalled that on August 9, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, signed the ratification documents on the accession of Sweden and Finland to the North Atlantic Alliance.

Finland and Sweden applied to join NATO after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but initially faced resistance from Turkey, which accused them of supporting what it considers terrorist groups.

But at the end of June it became known that Turkey refused to block the expansion of NATO.

Earlier, the Turkish authorities stated that Finland and Sweden still have not met Turkey’s demands regarding the extradition of “Kurdish terrorists”, which are a condition for the countries’ accession to NATO. The position of the Turkish authorities remains unchanged.

In addition, Stoltenberg stated that Ukraine’s membership in NATO depends on victory in the war against the Russian Federation.
