Military expert, military pilot-instructor, reserve colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Roman Svitan commented on the attack on Russian ships in the temporarily occupied Sevastopol on the night of September 13. According to him, this unique operation began a month ago.
As the expert noted on the air “24 channels“, it is very difficult to detect and hit a submarine that has surfaced and is performing tasks above sea level or in dry dock. In general, any attack on a submarine is a very difficult operation, for which it is necessary to involve several types of troops at once.
According to Svitan, airplanes, helicopters, anti-submarine weapons, submarines, ships, and a large number of depth charges are used to carry out such an attack – all these means are necessary to identify the location of the target.
“And in this case, one missile damaged a submarine that was in dry dock. This is a very complex operation, which was most likely carried out with the cooperation of Ukrainian forces and means of various military branches,” he explained.
The expert assumes that the operation itself began at least a month ago. Around that time, the Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile complex and the long-range radar over-the-horizon detection station, which were supposed to intercept missiles heading towards Sevastopol, were destroyed in Crimea.
Part of this operation was also the work of the GUR of the Ministry of Defense, because the Zmiiny Island, as well as the “Boika towers” in the Black Sea, were cleared of Russian long-range detection means.
“It was a complex operation. Probably the last stage of it used aircraft that launched cruise missiles of the Storm Shadow/SCALP-EG level, or “Neptune” air-based, or Harpoon. And this operation ended with damage, and possibly the destruction of one or two sides “A large amphibious ship and a submarine are serious targets, one of the main ones that the Defense Forces need to destroy,” says Svitan.

Attack on Russian ships in Sevastopol
On the night of September 13, several explosions rang out in the temporarily occupied Crimea. The network reported about the arrival in Sevastopol, after which a large-scale fire broke out.
Later it became known that two Russian ships were damaged. Thus, an attack was made on the Russian large amphibious ship “Minsk” and a submarine carrying “Caliber” missiles, with which Russia terrorizes Ukrainian cities. At the same time, the monitoring group Oryx “Minsk” was recognized as not just damaged, but completely destroyed.
Andriy Yusov, the representative of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, noted that the damaged ships are highly unlikely to be restored.
