On October 23, the Secretary of Defense of the United States of America, Lloyd Austin, had a telephone conversation with the head of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Sergei Shoigu.

It is noted that Austin’s repeated call invited Shoigu.
“Secretary of State Austin rejected any pretext for Russian escalation and confirmed the value of continued communication in the context of Russia’s illegal and unjustified war against Ukraine,” the message reads.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported only that the heads of the defense departments discussed the “situation in Ukraine”.
As you know, this is the second telephone conversation between them in three days.
Negotiations between Austin and Shoigu
As UNIAN reported, for the first time since the start of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine, the head of the Pentagon, Austin, spoke with Shoigu on May 13.
Then he called for an immediate ceasefire and stressed the importance of maintaining lines of communication.
At the time, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation said that the heads of ministries “discussed urgent issues of international security, including the situation in Ukraine.”
The second conversation took place on October 21. Both sides did not release details. After that, Austin called his Ukrainian colleague Oleksiy Reznikov and assured him that the US would continue to help Ukraine.
