“Sweden and Finland have strong democratic institutions, strong military forces and a strong and transparent economy. They will meet all the requirements of NATO – we are sure of this – and will make … our alliance stronger,” Biden said.

He noted that the United States is “committed to the transatlantic partnership,” especially in the face of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

“At a time when Putin’s Russia has destroyed peace and security in Europe, when autocrats are challenging the very foundations of the legal order, the strength of the Transatlantic Alliance and America’s commitment to NATO is more important than ever,” Biden said.

When the invasion began, “Putin thought he could destroy it” and “weaken our resolve,” the US president said. “When Finland and Sweden bring the number of allies to 32, we will be stronger than ever,” Biden said.

  • In June, 30 NATO allies signed accession protocols for Finland and Sweden, now it is necessary for all members of the alliance to ratify this decision. Ratification could take up to a year and has already been approved by several countries, including Canada, Germany and Italy.
  • On August 3, the US Senate approved the entry of Finland and Sweden into NATO.
