While elections are still pending in some states, Biden said the Democrats got stronger results than expected.
“I think it was a good day for democracy. And I think it was a good day for America,” the US president said.
Biden noted that “any loss of seat is painful,” saying that some Democrats did not win the election, but overall he thinks the Democrats did well in the election.
“We have lost fewer seats in the House of Representatives than in the first midterm elections of any Democratic president in 40 years,” he said.
Biden has signaled he’s willing to work with Republicans if they win the House, but there are issues he won’t compromise on.
“I’m willing to work with my fellow Republicans,” Biden said. “I think the American people have made it clear that they expect the Republicans to be willing to work with me as well.”
Biden stressed that he counts on continued cooperation in all areas for the supply of aid to Ukraine.
“On the foreign policy front, I hope we continue our bipartisan approach to confronting Russian aggression in Ukraine,” Biden said.
He said he would not support Republican proposals that would exacerbate inflation, nor would he backtrack on the historic commitments the US has made to deal with the climate crisis.
