As noted, the dependence of the Czech Republic on Russian oil can be eliminated with the help of the TAL (Trans Alpine Pipeline) pipeline, which serves Italy, Austria and Germany.

“This is very important if we are going to put in place an embargo to ensure that citizens and companies have enough oil,” the prime minister said on May 5.

The European Union is considering a ban on Russian oil imports as part of the sixth round of sanctions. However, this would be problematic for the Czech Republic due to its dependency. On May 4, Fiala said he would like the Czech Republic to delay the embargo on Russian oil for two to three years.

Now, however, Fiala says the TAL pipeline could remove the Czech Republic’s dependence on Russia.

“Strengthening pipeline capacity is the key to reducing dependence on Russian oil,” he said.

Fiala reportedly discussed the option with the German prime minister. Olaf Scholz.

“TAL will solve our problems. It is also the easiest option, because we do not need to build additional infrastructure, it will be enough to expand the capacity,” he said. “But this requires the willingness of the countries participating in the TAL pipeline, i.e. Italy, Austria and Germany or Bavaria, increase its capacity.”

  • The sixth package of sanctions against Russia will consist of four parts, one of them is the imposition of an embargo on Russian oil.
