“I can’t give you any details about this – tell you when and how this will happen, but I am sure that this is to be expected. And it will be,” the ambassador said.

He hinted that work on the eighth package could be activated after the holiday period.

“I think it cannot be said now that Brussels is in a period of very active work, but it continues, as well as in member states demanding more sanctions. The EU institutions should take this into account, and they are doing it,” Maasikas said.

  • On August 19, the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it plans to make a formal proposal to the European Commission for the introduction of the eighth package of sanctions against Russia. The key point of this package could be the closure of the Schengen area for Russian citizens, but so far only individual EU countries support such a step.
  • Seventh package of sanctions The European Union introduced on 21 July. Since it was mainly aimed at closing loopholes to circumvent previously introduced restrictions, this package was nicknamed “the sixth and a half.”
  • Sixth package of sanctions with a really serious limitation – the oil embargo – was introduced in early June.
