“If we talk about the story that the Russians are going to build some kind of railway in the temporarily occupied south of Ukraine, then two points should be noted there. The Russian railway troops are a very powerful engineering component, because before the full-scale invasion they had 40,000 personnel. They have the equipment to build military field railways relatively quickly. These are sufficiently qualified people who, unfortunately, were able to repair the railways that the Russian army initially damaged in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine,” said the Defense Express expert.
Ivan Kyrychevskyi added that the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Shoigu involved military specialists in laying the second track of the BAM (Baikalo-Amur highway – ed.).
“There is no doubt that the occupiers will be able to build a new railway line 50 km long, as well as a railway bridge over the Kalmius River. The question is how long will it take them? Roughly, maybe a few months, but who knows, suddenly they will speed up. If we evaluate the impact of this construction on the course of events in the south, then it is too early for us to panic,” the military analyst noted.
Kirichevskyi reminded that according to the information from the adviser of the mayor of Mariupol Petro Andryushchenko, it is known that the railway from Taganrog should be a junction between Mariupol and Volnovakha, that is, talk about an alternative to the Crimean bridge in advance.
“If we take the context of the offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, then it is aimed at cutting the corridor from the occupied Donbas to Crimea. And the most vulnerable section of this corridor, in particular the railway, just goes along the highway Volnovakha, Komysh-Zorya, Pologa and further to Melitopol. And our movement on Tokmak is aimed at bringing this section of the highway under tighter fire control. That is, the Russians want to simplify logistics to Mariupol, but not resolve the issue, how to double the logistics from Mariupol, Volnovakha and to Melitopol. Thus, it turns out that the occupiers can make two isolated logistical islands: the first – Crimea and Melitopol, and the second – Taganrog, Mariupol and Volnovakha. But it still isn’t will solve the problem their logistics, because the Armed Forces will be able to cut this corridor from Donbas to Crimea. That is, the occupiers will be able to create problems and unpleasant things for us, and somewhere they are anyway won’t save,” summed up Mr. Ivan.
- On September 27, the adviser to the mayor of Mariupol, Petro Andryushchenko, said that the Russian occupiers are trying to build a direct railway connection between the Russian Federation and the temporarily occupied cities of Donetsk region – Mariupol, Volnovakha and Donetsk
