Shortly before leaving the post of Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel tried to organize negotiations with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. However, these efforts did not bring results due to the lack of leverage on him.
As Merkel noted in an interview with the magazine The mirror, she and French President Emmanuel Macron planned to hold talks with Putin within the EU in the summer of 2021.
“But I no longer had the leverage to insist, because, in the end, everyone knew: she is leaving in the fall,” said the ex-chancellor.
According to her, the feeling of losing all leverage over the Russian dictator clearly appeared during her last visit to Moscow in August 2021. Merkel admitted that she was no longer perceived as an influential politician.
“The feeling was very clear: ‘From the point of view of influence in politics, you are finished.’ Only power is important for Putin,” she said.
Merkel’s statements about the war in Ukraine
Before that, the former Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, reacted to the threats of the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, to use nuclear weapons. She stated that it would be political wisdom to take these statements seriously. According to her, all Putin’s threats should not be considered a bluff.
Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to the head of the president’s office, reacted to Merkel’s words, saying that European countries still look back at Russia and fear it, despite the successful counteroffensive actions of the Ukrainian army.
