Declaring the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency is expected to provide additional US funding and funds to fight the disease.

As of August 3, there were over 6,600 cases of monkeypox in the United States.

“We are ready to take our response to the next level in the fight against this virus, and we urge every American to take monkeypox seriously,” US Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra said at a briefing.

Monkeypox began to spread in Europe and then moved to the United States, which now has the most cases of the disease in the world.

Governments are introducing vaccines and treatments that were first approved for smallpox but also work for monkeypox.

The US government intends to vaccinate more than 1.6 million high-risk people.

First identified in monkeys in 1958, monkeypox has mild symptoms, including fever, pain and purulent skin lesions, and humans typically recover from it within two to four weeks, according to the WHO. It is spread through close physical contact and is rarely fatal.
