Sunak said that in a conversation with Zelensky, he stressed the United Kingdom’s unwavering support for Ukraine.
“The prime minister said the UK’s support for Ukraine during his premiership will be as strong as ever, and President Zelensky can count on his government to continue to show solidarity,” the statement said.
The Prime Minister also noted the importance of the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Ukraine to ensure nuclear safety.
Both leaders agreed on the need to continue to put pressure on “Putin’s barbaric regime with continued economic sanctions,” Downing Street said in a statement.
“President Zelensky congratulated the prime minister on his appointment and wished him a happy Diwali (Indian and Hindu holiday – ed.). The prime minister thanked him and said he hoped they would see each other soon,” the UK government said.
Earlier today, Zelensky said that Sunak, as the new British Prime Minister, made his first call to Ukraine. The President in a conversation with the Prime Minister expressed the hope that cooperation between Ukraine and the UK will only deepen.
