US Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a “Nazi” during a debate. His campaign headquarters is trying to tone down his remarks.
He writes about it The Hill.
During the debate, Ramaswamy said that Ukraine is not a “model of democracy.” “This is a country that banned 11 opposition parties. It united all mass media into one state television. This is not democratic. She threatened not to hold this year’s elections unless the US provided more money. This is not democratic. They glorified a Nazi in their ranks – a comedian in cargo pants, a man named Zelensky. This is not democratic”– he said.
After the debate, representatives of Ramaswamy’s campaign headquarters said that he allegedly did not mean Zelensky when he spoke about Nazis. According to members of the staff, Ramaswamy “rather wanted to talk about the incident in the Canadian Parliament in September, when 98-year-old Ukrainian-Canadian veteran Yaroslava Gunko, who fought in the Halychyna SS division, was there.”

According to The New York Times, Ramaswamy’s statement caused surprise and outrage both in the debate hall and online.
We will remind you that earlier Vivek Ramaswamy said that he was in favor of handing over the occupied territories of Ukraine to Russia and against Kyiv joining NATO.
