People who fled the war twice – residents return to the modular town in Kharkiv | News of Kharkiv and Ukraine

The modular town for migrants was built as temporary housing in 2014. For several years, the boxes have exhausted their reserve of serviceability, but people have not been resettled. The population of the modular town in February 2022 was 176 people. After February 24, some people left, and when four shells flew into the area in March, others gathered.

This is not a projectile, this is a blank hit. Tore all the electrical wiring and stuck here.

Natalia is from Luhansk region. She came to Kharkiv to perform surgery on a child with a disability in 2014 and was unable to return home – her native Alchevsk was occupied. But in 2022, history repeats itself – a woman flees the war again. Natalia was moved to a nursing home, where vacancies were found, but explosions began to take place there as well.

We were provided with everything, beds … But since it was shooting – both at the district, at the KhG – we were afraid, we went down to the basement. It was audible well – and the basement was twitching and that’s it. And then I felt bad, my sugar jumped – the doctors forbade me to go down.

In late May, people began to return to their rooms. Now the town has 24 inhabitants.

We have mostly socially unprotected – either large families or people with disabilities. Return and with children, and pensioners. Absolutely different. We warn that the modular city does not protect against anything. These are structures in which you can not hide. We are worried about the safety of our wards.

They have nowhere to go, says Natalia. She does not even hope to return to her hometown in Luhansk region.

And we are getting used to it. I endure the second war. This is your first time. When we arrived here, normal people were also beaten, but there were also such people – who you came from, who you are. Now people felt somehow approaching.

After the shelling, Natalie’s house was left without electricity, like many others.

Damaged percent 35 modules. Roofs, floors, cut by fragments. A lot of modules were left without glasses. The walls were torn off from the blast wave, there are problems with the electrics, but we are fixing it. Since the electrics are in the walls, and the walls are torn off – I don’t know if it will be possible to restore those that suffered directly from the hit. There is no wall here and the whole room is destroyed. The neighboring module is pierced through.

The degree of destruction of structures and their suitability for further operation should be assessed by experts, says the head of maintenance of the town of migrants. And he adds – the modules served in the 17th year.
