Protests in China began after fire in one of the houses in the city of Urumqi, the agency notes. 10 people died. Many Chinese have written online that they think these people could have escaped if the house had not been locked down due to the lockdown.

The fire and the authorities’ denial of the role of COVID restrictions in the deaths have sparked an unprecedented wave of defiance since Xi Jinping came to power, journalists write. In Shanghai, China’s most populous city, people took to a street named after Urumqi.

The demonstrators were watched by the police. The protesters were holding blank sheets of paper – a symbol of disagreement with censorship. They also called for lifting the lockdown in Urumqi and China.

According to eyewitnesses and video recordings, a large group of demonstrators shouted: “Down with the Chinese Communist Party, down with Xi Jinping!” This is a rare public protest against the Chinese leadership, according to Reuters.
