Russian forces continue to conduct pointless offensives around Donetsk and Bakhmut instead of focusing on defending against ongoing Ukrainian counter-offensives. About it informs Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in a summary on September 17th.

As noted, Russian troops continue to attack Bakhmut and various villages near Donetsk, which have only the emotional significance of DPR terrorists and nothing else.
“The Russians appear to be directing some of their very limited reserves available in Ukraine to these efforts rather than to the vulnerable Russian defensive lines hastily erected along the Oskol River in eastern Kharkiv Oblast,” ISW analysts said.
According to military experts, the Russians cannot hope for success around Bakhmut or Donetsk and seem to be continuing almost automatic efforts to gain ground in the Donetsk region.
The ISW notes that Russia’s inability to send large reinforcements to the eastern part of Kharkov and the Luhansk region makes most of the Russian-occupied north-east of Ukraine extremely vulnerable.
“Russian forces continue to prioritize strategically pointless offensives around Donetsk and Bakhmut over defense against ongoing Ukrainian counter-offensives in the Kharkiv region,” military experts concluded.
