The President of Latvia, in his initiative, stressed that the proposed order would restore the historical status of the LOC and make it impossible for the Patriarch of Moscow to rule over the church in Latvia. He notes that the Moscow Patriarchate “supports the ruling regime in Russia and the war that Russia is waging against Ukraine.”

Levits believes that “the LOC’s rejection of any connection with the Moscow Patriarchate is an important issue for the Orthodox, the entire Latvian society and for national security.”

Artuss Kaimiņš, chairman of the Saeima Commission on Human Rights and Public Affairs, said that the purpose of the law is “to consolidate the historical self-sufficiency and independence of the Latvian Orthodox Church” and to stop the influence of the Russian Orthodox Church on the church in Latvia.

The adopted law does not deal with canonical issues, but establishes the procedure for the confirmation and dismissal of the metropolitan, archbishops and bishops. The church has an obligation to bring the charter in line with the new requirements of the law by October 31.

According to the statement of the President of Latvia, the LPC was informed about the preparation of the draft law.

“The Latvian Orthodox Church and Metropolitan Alexander can count on the full support of the Latvian state, which legally recognizes the church’s autocephalous status,” Levits said in a statement.
