German Chancellor Olaf Scholz still justifies his reluctance to supply long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine with the risk of “war escalation.”

His statement on the sidelines of the summit of the European Political Community is quoted Politico.

Asked by journalists why he does not want to send cruise missiles, the chancellor said that such a decision can be made only after “careful consideration”.

According to him, the government “should always take into account what the constitution requires of us and what our options are.” “This includes, in particular, the fact that we must of course ensure that there is no escalation of the war and that Germany does not become part of the conflict. My task as chancellor is to ensure this”– said Scholz.

Scholz did not specify what potential constitutional restrictions he was referring to. According to Bild, the chancellor is concerned that Germany will have to provide geodata about Russian targets and thereby play a more active role in the war. In addition, Scholz fears that Ukraine could use the Taurus to attack the Crimean bridge.

It will be recalled that the mass media also wrote that Scholz is postponing the delivery of missiles due to fears that German specialists will have to go to Ukraine to help with maintenance.

Earlier, former Russian President Dmytro Medvedev threatened that German factories would become a “legitimate target” if the country transferred Taurus missiles to Ukraine.

News about long-range missiles from the US are more optimistic: according to the media, President Joe Biden promised Volodymyr Zelensky to hand over ATACMS at the negotiations in Washington.
