On Saturday, October 22, the head of the Office of the President, Andriy Yermak, held an online meeting with representatives of international human rights organizations. The main issue of the video conference was the protection of the rights of Ukrainians in the places where Ukrainian prisoners of war are forcibly detained by the aggressor country and given access to them.

About this reports the official online representation of the Office of the President.

As noted, Yermak emphasized that Ukrainian prisoners of war are currently being held in terrible conditions and subjected to severe physical and psychological torture, contrary to all requirements of international law, including the Geneva Convention.

He emphasized that the international human rights community should move to decisive active actions, become more flexible in accordance with the situation created by Russia as an aggressor country, and take concrete steps to stop the impunity of the occupiers and protect Ukrainian prisoners from abuse and lawlessness.

At the same time, the head of the OPU offered representatives of international organizations to consider a plan that provides for specific steps to protect the rights of Ukrainians who are in captivity.

“I propose to immediately bring the issue of the Olenivka concentration camp, access to Ukrainian prisoners of war and the protection of their rights to the global level and adopt a joint declaration in which we strongly condemn war crimes, crimes against humanity, and Russia’s genocide against Ukrainians”– notes Yermak.

At the same time, the head of the OPU suggested holding weekly briefings by the ombudsman on the protection of human rights with the involvement of representatives of international human rights organizations, UN structures, the European Union, the Council of Europe, and the OSCE.

It is reported that the meeting was attended by the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubynets, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and deputy heads of the President’s Office.

We will remind you that on the night of July 29, at least 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war died in the colony in Olenivka, Donetsk region. Russia said that Ukraine allegedly struck the colony with a HIMARS surface-to-air missile.

However, experts based on the analysis of photos and videos from the scene of the tragedy, as well as satellite images, rule out the Russian version. Ukraine still has no official information on the number of dead and wounded in Olenivka.

In September, the occupiers again fired at the Olenivska colony and blamed the Armed Forces, there is a dead person.

Earlier, the UN explained why they had not yet sent an investigation mission to Olenivka.
