The demand for blood is consistently high, donors are needed: how the Blood Service Center works in war conditions News of Kharkiv and Ukraine

Since the second day of the war, the Kharkiv blood center has been operating in the basement, where they descended after the terrible shelling of Klochkivska. Then, on February 25, three employees of the center were injured, and the donor, who did not have time to enter the building, died.

It was like being in a fog for me, I was here with my daughter, there were very loud explosions, the donors and I went down to the basement. Everything was abandoned. During the night of February 25, we brought everything down here, we prepared everything for work all night. There were a lot of donors on February 24, the queue was all the way to the street. During the day, we received 300 people, they stayed here to work, and some stayed overnight.

The bomb shelter in the building is large, more than a hundred people – employees, their relatives and even acquaintances – were able to stay in the premises.

A lot of workers lived here, they all stayed that night and afterwards, only went home to get some things and feed the animals. In this hall, blood is donated on such stirrer scales. Then platelets are donated here, now they will be connected to this procedure. We do not collect plasma now, the main thing is to collect erythrocytes and platelets.

The demand for blood remains constantly at a high level – donors are needed all the time, the blood center is waiting for them regardless of holidays and days of the week.

Medical and prophylactic institutions of the city and region in the controlled territory constantly need blood and blood components, both for wounded soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and for civilians who continue to get sick and stay in medical institutions. In the early days, a huge number of people came to donate blood. Then many left, the flow decreased. At the beginning of May it became quieter in the city – it grew again. This undulation is observed, and we need a constant number of donors to come and donate blood to ensure.

Of those who donate blood now, none are permanent donors, all are here for the first time. Emotions are different.

Natalya

A little awkward, the first thing that confused me was that there were no people. I live in the suburbs and have wanted to come for a long time, but somehow it didn’t work out. And yesterday I looked at Instagram and saw what was needed. And since my first one is negative, it fits almost everyone. And I realized that there are no obstacles if you want something.

Dmytro

It’s not scary at all, you have to help the boys. He did not come alone – with his wife and a friend. They gathered yesterday, prepared, did not eat anything harmful.

Artem

I saw a message on Facebook that a negative blood type is required and I decided why not go. Before that, I had never donated, I hoped that they would give a hematogen, but the doctor says that he would not, so I feel a little disappointed. It didn’t hurt at all, none of the five lost consciousness. Come boldly, the team is good, everyone will be met, the air conditioner works.

The main work on collection and preparation of blood is carried out in basements, staff and donors are safe. But employees still have to climb to the main building of the blood center, to the third floor. It is impossible to lower all the equipment into the bomb shelter.

There’s big separation equipment, centrifuges, you have to go there and separate. Then we bring everything down here, and registration of finished components and marking is already taking place here. Also, when the laboratory gives us the results of all examinations, we can issue the blood to our logistics department. This is what we do here.

In the spring, some people left, but some still live here – their homes are either far away or in a dangerous area, or completely destroyed.

But also scary. I live in Dergachy, who is from Saltivka. Rockets have been flying at night for 3 months now, it worries people, it’s scary. We do not evict anyone, let them come and spend the night.

All residents and employees of the center are fed by dentist Serhiy.

Serhii, chef-dentist

What do we feed… Today there will be soup with sausage and smoked meats. We will not cook solyanka. I just love to cook. When they came here, I started cooking. But there are also tools. Sometimes I fulfill my duties. I am a dentist. We cook for about 100 people. At the beginning of the war, when 125-130 people lived here, they prepared for a larger number. The first is prepared by ourselves, the second is brought to us by volunteers.

Thanks to the volunteers, there was also a stove here – in case the electricity or gas is turned off.

Serhii, chef-dentist

The stove-oven, we started it, works clearly. The hood is made, everything is as it should be. While they haven’t cooked, summer is hot, but it will be fine in winter.

So at least hot lunches are provided to the employees of the blood service center under any conditions.
