The EU approved sanctions against Iran for the supply of drones to Russia – details

Due to the delivery of Iranian drones to Russia, 8 persons and institutions responsible for this were included in the sanctions list.

On Monday, December 12, the European Union adopted a new package of sanctions against Iran for the supply of weapons to Russia, which it uses for attacks on Ukraine, as well as restrictive measures in connection with gross violations of human rights by the Iranian authorities.

This was stated by EU High Representative Josep Borrell during a press conference in Brussels, reports “Ukrinform”.

Today in Brussels, the EU Council of Ministers for Foreign Affairs took place, which considered the security situation in connection with Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the EU’s measures to respond to this aggression, as well as the situation in Iran.

“We considered Tehran’s support for Russia. Due to the delivery of Iranian drones to Russia, 8 persons and institutions responsible for this were included in the sanctions list. Iran claims that these drones were delivered to Russia before it started the war. But these sanctions are a powerful signal to Iran. This is the first time since 2019 that we have applied such a package of sanctions against Iran.”– said Borrell.

The EU official also emphasized that the very disturbing situation in Iran is the observance of human rights, as the authorities of this country continue repression against Iranian women and girls defending their rights and dignity, as well as against participants in protest demonstrations.

“It is now clear that the Iranian authorities have begun to carry out death sentences against Protestants. Already the second participant of the protests was executed, this time – publicly and after a very short trial. We consider it unacceptable to use a higher penalty as a tool for repression against protest participants. We are directing a new package of sanctions in connection with the violation of human rights against those who are guilty of these repressions against the participants of the protests. There are 21 people on the list, and this is a manifestation of the European Union’s support for the people of Iran.”– emphasized the High Representative of the EU.

We will remind that the currency of Iran fell to a new low due to ties with the Russian Federation and protests in the country.

The day before, Borrell told at what stage of agreement the ninth package of sanctions against the Russian Federation.
