The laureate of the 2023 Booker Prize for Literature was an Irish writer

About this it is said on the award website.

Lynch’s novel chronicles the struggle of a mother of four to save her family as Ireland descends into totalitarianism.

The head of the jury, Esi Edugyan, noted that the book “Song of the Prophet” reflects the social and political anxieties of today.

“Prophetic Song” tells about one woman’s attempts to save her family in a dystopian Ireland, which is sliding further and further into authoritarian rule. This is a striking, at times tender novel that is not easily forgotten… The book has one of the most dizzying endings you will ever read, it lives on in your memory long after you have read it,” other members have commented on the book the jury

According to the writer himself, his novel was influenced by the events in Syria, the refugee problem and the actions of the West.

“I tried to look into the modern chaos. Riots in Western democracies. The problem of Syria – the implosion of the entire nation, the scale of the refugee crisis and the indifference of the West… I wanted to immerse the reader in this topic so much that by the end of the book he not only knew, but felt this the problem is on oneself,” explained the author of the book.

By the way, Paul Lynch became the fifth Irish writer to win the Booker Prize. He also received a 拢50,000 award at a ceremony in London.
