Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the decision on whether to send Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine should be made by individual countries.
In Germany, they declare the need to coordinate the supply of air defense to Ukraine with NATO, it is reported Reuters.
“Specific decisions about specific systems are national decisions. Sometimes there are end-user agreements and other things, so they need to consult with other allies. But at the end of the day, it’s up to national governments to make that decision,” Stoltenberg said.
Patriot systems for Ukraine: details
Germany offered Poland help in the supply of anti-missile systems, in particular the Patriot air defense system, to strengthen the potential of air defense.
Poland accepted the offer of the German side. Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak first said that Warsaw wanted to deploy the Patriot anti-missile system on the border with Ukraine, but later offered Germany to transfer the systems to Ukraine.
Commenting on the Polish side’s proposal to transfer weapons to Kyiv, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht noted that the Patriot systems are part of NATO’s comprehensive air defense. Their use outside the Alliance should be discussed with NATO and Germany’s allies.
