The fiercest fighting continues in the Bakhmut region, and the Russians are not able to advance there, but they have set themselves the goal of reaching the borders of the Donetsk region before the end of the year. This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Defense Anna Painter in a telethon interview.

“Bakhmut is indeed now our eastern fortress, and the enemy has indeed now concentrated most of his forces, military equipment and weapons there. They set themselves the task of reaching the borders of the Donetsk region by the end of this calendar year,” Malyar said.
On October 17, Malyar said that the Russian military leadership had set the task for the invaders to capture Bakhmut in the Donetsk region by the end of October.
According to her, the invaders can no longer hold the front line that they initially occupied, therefore now they are choosing certain areas where they can concentrate maximum efforts and where, as they think, it will be easiest to achieve their goal.
Nevertheless, Maliar emphasized that the Ukrainian defenders hold the front and inflict losses on the enemy, and the Russian army cannot move further.
“There has been little progress, but [украинские войска] ousted the enemy, and today the enemy is trying to encircle the city, and they are not succeeding either,” Malyar said.
