The Ukrainian people became laureates of the Sakharov Prize – this award is presented annually by the European Parliament.

This was announced by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metzola, on Twitter on Wednesday, October 19.

«They stand up for what they believe in. Fighting for our values. They defend democracy, freedom and the rule of law. They risk their lives for us. No one is more worthy. Congratulations to the brave people of Ukraine“, Metzola said.

It is known that the Sakharov Freedom of Thought Award is a human rights award established in 1988 by the European Parliament. The award is the main human rights award of the EU.

Members of the European Parliament nominate candidates for the Sakharov Prize in September each year. Each candidate must win the support of at least 40 members of parliament, and each individual MP can support only one candidacy.

It will be recalled that last year the European Parliament awarded the Sakharov Prize to the Russian opposition leader Oleksiy Navalny.

The award was also presented to the Belarusian opposition.
