On Wednesday, August 3, the US Senate adopted a resolution on the ratification of the protocols on the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO. Voting is still ongoing, but the document has already received enough votes to be approved.

It is reported C-SPAN.

It is noted that in accordance with the peculiarities of American legislation, the ratification procedure is directly carried out by the president, and the Senate gives its consent. Now the head of the United States, Joe Biden, must sign the relevant documents on the accession of Stockholm and Helsinki to NATO and send them to the Alliance.

At the same time, the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO must be ratified by all members of the bloc. To date, more than 20 of the 30 member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance have done so.

Finland and Sweden applied to join NATO after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but initially faced resistance from Turkey, which accused them of supporting what it considers terrorist groups.

But at the end of June it became known that Turkey refused to block the expansion of NATO.

It will be recalled that on July 5, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland Pekka Haavisto and his colleague from Sweden Ann Linde signed the protocols on joining the Alliance at the NATO headquarters.

Recently, Germany also approved the application of Finland and Sweden to join NATO.
