She stated this during a special press conference on August 10 in Washington, reports Ukrinform.
“We are not moving away from this (the “one China” policy – ed.). But at the same time, we will not allow China to isolate Taiwan,” Pelosi noted.
According to her, the US remains on the positions defined in the three joint communiqués between America and China, as well as other agreements regarding Taiwan.
However, the congresswoman added that Beijing cannot prohibit the US parliamentary delegation from visiting Taiwan. And the purpose of her last visit to the island was to congratulate the flourishing democracy, to express respect for the successful economy and the enthusiasm of the people who preserve their democratic order.
- Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan ended on August 3. The speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress held symbolic meetings with the leadership of the island state, received an order and visited a museum highlighting Taiwan’s struggle with China.
- The heads of foreign affairs of the G7 countries supported Pelosi’s visit. The statement was signed by Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Great Britain, the United States and the High Representative of the European Union.
- On August 5, Beijing announced that it would impose sanctions on US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. This is due to the fact that she visited Taiwan. Subsequently, the authorities of the People’s Republic of China announced the termination of cooperation with the United States.
- The White House then summoned China’s ambassador to denounce Beijing’s escalating threats and reiterate that the United States does not want a crisis in Taiwan.
