Witnesses told Reuters that a powerful explosion was heard in the northern district of Kabul, as a result of which windows in nearby buildings were blown out.
“The explosion happened inside a mosque… there are casualties, but the numbers are not yet known,” Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran told Reuters.
A security official told Al Jazeera that 20 people were killed and 40 others were injured in the blast. 27 patients injured in the explosion, including a seven-year-old child, were sent to the emergency hospital. The Associated Press news agency reported at least 10 dead. The Reuters source added that an imam was among those killed.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed that the explosion killed and wounded people, but did not specify how many.
