The draft final statement of the EU summit on May 30-31, which was seen by the agency’s journalists, says that the European Union “is unwavering in its desire to help Ukraine exercise its inalienable right to self-defense against Russian aggression.” It does not mention peace negotiations.

At a meeting of EU representatives on Friday, May 20, the Italian ambassador proposed changes to the text, stating that they should call for peace talks and the establishment of an immediate ceasefire as one of the main goals of the EU. This was reported to Reuters by sources present at the meeting.

This proposal was supported by Hungary and Cyprus, which, according to the agency, are among the states most critical of the new package of EU sanctions against Russia. Hungary opposes an oil embargo and Cyprus is concerned about a proposed ban on the sale of real estate to Russian citizens.
