On Monday, December 26, Ukraine plans to raise the issue of the continued presence of the Russian Federation in the UN Security Council.

This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleby broadcasts of the telethon. According to him, Russia has no right to be in this organization.

“Tomorrow we will officially take this position… We have a very simple question: does Russia have the right to remain a permanent member of the UN Security Council and to be in the United Nations at all? We have a convincing and reasoned answer – no, it does not have Kuleba said.

The minister added that the question of Russia’s future after its defeat in the war in Ukraine is no longer prohibited for discussion in world diplomacy.

“These issues are not yet discussed at press conferences and in public statements of the leaders of states and governments, but at a lower level people are already asking the question – what should Russia become so that it does not pose a threat to peace and security,” said Kuleba.

Russia in the UN Security Council

Russia is one of the permanent members of the UN Security Council. This gives her the opportunity to block the adoption of any decisions in this structure. And in addition, Russian so-called diplomats use this platform to promote their propaganda. Sometimes so ridiculous that even the diplomats of other countries do not have the strength to listen to Russian delusions.

In view of the brutal war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine in September, President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the international community to deprive Russia of permanent membership in the UN Security Council and exclude it from all international organizations. According to him, a state that is currently implementing a genocidal policy, is keeping the world one step away from a radiation disaster and at the same time threatening nuclear strikes cannot remain a permanent member of the UN Security Council with the right of veto.

But in the USA, two legislators who head an independent government human rights organization introduced a resolution to Congress calling on President Joe Biden to withdraw Russia from the UN Security Council. And although the UN Charter does not contain any provisions on the removal of a permanent member of the Security Council, it is possible if the status of the Russian Federation as the successor of the Soviet Union is disputed.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, states that Ukraine is preparing to prove the illegality of Russia’s presence in the Security Council of the United Nations. “Russia occupies the seat of a permanent member of the UN Security Council without proper legal grounds as a result of a blatantly fraudulent scheme that took place 31 years ago,” Kuleba said.
