Tour of the half-destroyed Kharkiv Ecopark: which of the animals have already been returned and when the opening |

Date:

We will return everyone. Employees of the Kharkiv Ecopark work under this motto today. The huge collection before the full-scale invasion had about 5 thousand specimens. It is difficult to calculate how many are left – some animals died, some escaped into the forest from broken enclosures, some managed to be evacuated. Svitlana Vyshnevetska, deputy director of the zoo-veterinary department, recalls today how large predators were taken away. Then, he says, under shelling, no one was afraid of animals.

Since there was little anesthesia, it was difficult to calculate it for everyone. It happened that the lion opened his eye, and our guys pushed him further so that they could close the cage.

Two large lions and two cubs born in the evacuation have already returned. Sashko the bison is already at home, whose parents died due to a direct hit by a projectile. Experts were not sure if the calf would survive.

It was very cold, there was nothing to eat, they thought they would blow themselves up or something else. But, thank God, he survived and is fighting for his life. He is in his place, he lives for now with Hungarian biks, but there will be young ladies here, and he will have a young lady and we will have one of the best herds.

One of the most interesting locations of the ecopark is the enclosure for raccoons. Here everything was done for the comfortable life of the animal, there were shelters and places to rest.

And the opportunity to run, frolic, and relax. The jewelry is in such a beautiful style. And from hits, from flying in, from breaking windows, the infrastructure was destroyed. This is also subject to restoration and repair.

Second location. Porcupines, martens, and ferrets lived here.

Serhiy Ostapenko, director of “Feldman Ecopark”

As you can see from the holes, ecocide took place here. The Russians stood here and shot our animals from a distance of 10 m. It is clear from the holes that these are not fragments, but bullet holes, round and neat.

Several corpses were found in each enclosure. This location will not be restored yet.

Serhiy Ostapenko, director of “Feldman Ecopark”

For now it will stand as a reminder of our former friendly people. This is a monument to aggression, the destruction of not only people, but also animals.

During the evacuation of the animals, no one doubted that they would have to return. And now, as soon as the repair of the aviary is completed, former residents are moving in.

Serhiy Ostapenko, director of “Feldman Ecopark”

We already have several groups of ungulates and have begun to return predators, we have 4 lions. Two large ones and two small ones.

They are preparing housing for monkeys and lemurs. Next up are jaguars, puma and birds.

This is one of the moose that was rescued when there was a fire in the Chernobyl zone. They were evacuated to us and she was one of the six left, the rest died under fire. And she was waiting in Kovalevka to return home – and now she was home.

The consequences of shelling have not yet been completely eliminated here. A shell-pierced roof is visible. Before the war, a warthog lived here.

Serhiy Ostapenko, director of “Feldman Ecopark”

He died during the shelling. We lost the warthog. And this guy is a Maltese donkey, the military brought him to us from near Bakhmut so that we could look after him.

Cleaning is actively underway in the ecopark, preparations are being made for the traditional autumn Chrysanthemum Ball. They say that a quarter of the territory has yet to be checked by sappers, but most of the park has already been demined and is safe. From the remnants of projectiles, which the sappers found on the territory and which no longer pose a threat, a considerable collection was taken to the ecopark. To bring the territory to order as soon as possible, the ecopark needs helpers. Those who used to like to relax here are invited.

We really need the help of everyone who cares. Ecopark has been giving its love and free admission to all visitors for more than 10 years. And now the townspeople have the opportunity to come on the weekend and help us, we will be glad to see everyone. Let’s give a front line of work and together we will try to revive this beautiful place.

All cleaning tools are promised to be provided, the main thing, they say, that you need to take with you is the desire to help.
