In March, the Pentagon and the Russian Defense Ministry created a communication channel to “prevent errors, violations and escalations” – it is regularly tested, but for its intended purpose, according to Reuters, it was used only once. The hotline connects the US European Command and the Russian National Defense Command Center.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the United States initiated the call on this “deconflict” line to express its concerns about Russian military operations near critical infrastructure in Ukraine.
The official declined to give details, but said the special communications line was not in use when a rocket landed in Poland on November 15, killing two people.
Reuters suggests that during the emergency call, it could have been about the actions of the Russian Federation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, or about the plans of the Russian invaders to blow up the Kakhovka dam.
