US Presidential Administration Joe Biden plans to sell four MQ-1C Gray Eagle combat drones equipped with Hellfire missiles to Ukraine. About it writes Reuters, citing three sources familiar with the situation.

The Biden administration intends to notify Congress of a possible sale of drones to Ukraine in the coming days, after which a public announcement is expected, a US official said.

Gray Eagle are the latest drones that can stay in the air for up to 30 hours or more, depending on the mission, and collect huge amounts of data for reconnaissance purposes. They can also carry up to eight powerful Hellfire missiles.

“The MQ-1C is a much larger drone, with a maximum takeoff weight of about three times the Bayraktar-TB2, with corresponding advantages in payload, range and endurance,” UAV expert Dan Gettinger told the agency.

The MQ-1C is also compatible with more ammunition than the Bayraktar-TB2. The Ukrainian Bayraktars are equipped with 22 kg Turkish-made MAM-L missiles, which is about half the weight of the Hellfire.

General Atomics’ drone system typically takes months to train, Goettinger said, but an abbreviated training plan for experienced Ukrainian operators has been offered in recent weeks.

Funds for the purchase of drones have been allocated from a $40 billion US military aid package to Ukraine.
