Vereshchuk noted that in the Russian Federation they can say “anything” about holding pseudo-referendums – this does not mean anything for Ukraine. For Russia, however, according to the minister, this will mean increased sanctions and increased military assistance to Ukraine from the West.

“I strongly urge our citizens, who, unfortunately, are now forced to stay in the temporarily occupied territories, not to take part in any “referendums”, to ignore, not to go, not to participate in precinct [избирательных] commissions, or whatever they call them. In general, ignore this process – thereby help the army and help yourself,” Vereshchuk said.

She also recalled the draft law agreed by the government on criminal liability for forced passportization in the occupied territories. It proposes to introduce a punishment of up to 15 years in prison for obtaining a Russian passport.

  • According to Russian propaganda media, the occupiers plan to hold pseudo-referendums on “joining Russia” with the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions from September 23 to 27.
  • Zelensky was told that the pseudo-referendums would not affect the position of the President and the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but if they were held, the slightest chance for diplomacy between Ukraine and the Russian Federation would be nullified.
