Without a fair and at the expense of patrons: the KMDA is not against a Christmas tree in Kyiv, but will consult with the military

The decision to install the country's main Christmas tree in Kyiv will be made after consultations with the defense forces. And, if it will be installed, it will be exclusively at the expense of patrons.

The decision to install the country’s main Christmas tree in Kyiv will be made after consultations with the defense forces. And, if it will be installed, it will be exclusively at the expense of patrons.

This is stated in answers The Committee of the Kyiv Council on Culture, Tourism and Public Communications on a petition regarding the inappropriateness of installing a Christmas tree in Kyiv under martial law, authored by Natalya Popovych.

According to the department, relevant departments were recommended to take into account all proposals regarding non-use of budget funds, compliance with safety measures and saving electricity. However, the commission of the Kyiv City Council did not support the petition in the part of the proposal not to install a Christmas tree.

Hanna Starostenko, deputy head of the KMDA, who is in charge of cultural issues, said that if the city, after consulting with the military, decides to install a Christmas tree, budget funds will not be spent on it.

«Patrons and socially responsible businesses have already approached us with the offer to help in setting up and decorating the Christmas tree. We are ready to provide the Christmas tree itself, and decorations, as well as a generator for lighting the Christmas tree, in case such a format is approved. After the holidays, we will be able to transfer it to a critical infrastructure institution or to the front. We are also considering the option that will illuminate the Christmas tree only on certain days or hours. For example, on opening day on December 19, Christmas (December 25 and January 7) and New Year’s Day.– said Hanna Starostenko.

She also emphasized that in the conditions of martial law, the city, as planned, is clear will refuse to organize a holiday fair and concerts near the main Christmas tree.

«Of course, fairs and concerts are not appropriate this year. We are considering the possibility of installing the main Christmas tree of the country as a symbol of the New Year and Christmas miracle and our indomitability. To prove that light conquers darkness and life conquers death. I am sure that the festive mood, which we still strive to preserve, first of all for children, will support positive emotions and faith in victory in all residents of the capital, which is so important nowStarostenko emphasized.

The Department of Municipal Security also emphasized that the decision to install the country’s main New Year tree will be made following consultations with the command of the group of forces and means of defense of the city of Kyiv.

We will remind, on November 9, on the website of the Kyiv City Council, a petition received the necessary number of votes for consideration, in which it is proposed to abandon the installation of a Christmas tree in the center of the capital, and to spend the saved funds on helping the army or displaced persons.

Earlier, Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko announced that a New Year’s tree can be installed in Kyiv, but there will definitely be no traditional mass celebrations. Details about the holidays were promised to be announced closer to December.
