Zelensky announced personnel changes: Reznikov will be replaced by Umerov

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy decided to replace the Minister of Defense of Ukraine. The head of state believes that Oleksiy Reznikov should be replaced by Rustam Umyerov.

He announced this in a traditional evening video address, he writes Public.

“Aleksii Reznikov went through more than 550 days of full-scale war. I believe that the ministry needs new approaches and other formats of interaction both with the military and with society as a whole. Rustem Umyerov should now head the Ministry,” the president said.

Zelenskyi added that he expects the parliament to support this candidacy. The Council will be asked to make a personnel decision this week.

“The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine knows this person well, and Mr. Umyerov does not need additional introductions,” the head of state said.

What is known about Umerov?

Rustem Umyerov is of Crimean Tatar origin. Before entering politics, he was a businessman, investor, philanthropist, and also an adviser to the leader of the Crimean Tatar people, Mustafa Dzhemilev.

Umerov started his career in 2004 in a telecommunications company, holding various management positions. Subsequently, in 2013, he founded the investment company ASTEM and the charitable fund ASTEM Foundation.

While working in the Verkhovna Rada, Umyerov headed the Temporary Special Commission on Monitoring the Receiving and Use of International Material and Technical Assistance. He was the co-chairman of the deputy association “Crimean Platform” and a member of the Ukrainian negotiation group with the Russian Federation.

In 2021, Umerov was awarded the Order of Merit, III degree. Yes, he was on the list of those whom President Volodymyr Zelenskyi noted for “significant personal contribution to state building, strengthening of defense capability, socio-economic, scientific-technical, cultural-educational development of the Ukrainian state, significant labor achievements, many years of conscientious work.”
