“Probably, everyone could see the state of Mikheil Saakashvili, the state of his health. Therefore, I appeal to the Georgian authorities: mercy must be shown. for Georgia,” Zelensky said.

He offered to transfer Saakashvili to any hospital in Ukraine, another European state or the United States.

“It’s time to take this good step,” Zelensky said.

Saakashvili led Georgia in 2008-2013. After losing the next election in 2013, he left the country. In the fall of 2021, Mikheil Saakashvili, who has been a citizen of Ukraine since May 2015, decided to return to his homeland after a long absence, despite a sentence in absentia. On October 1, 2021, immediately after his arrival in Georgia, Saakashavili was detained.

After his arrest, Saakashvili declared himself a political prisoner and went on a hunger strike to disagree with the charges brought against him and with earlier sentences in cases already considered in court.

He was placed in prison based on the 2018 Georgian court verdicts and trials in two more cases that have been ongoing since 2014.

Saakashvili ended his hunger strike only when his health became critical.

Georgian authorities refuse to pardon Saakashvili.
