The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said that the Russians had mined the dam and units of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station and could blow it up.
He said this in an address to the European Council, reports Interfax-Ukraine.
“We have information that Russian terrorists mined the dam and units of the Kakhovka hydroelectric plant. This is one of the large energy facilities. The dam of this hydroelectric power station holds a volume of about 18 million cubic meters of water. If Russian terrorists blow up this dam, more than 80 settlements, including Kherson, will be in the zone of rapid flooding,” he said on Thursday, speaking via video link at a meeting of the European Council.
“Water supply to a large part of southern Ukraine may be destroyed. This Russian terrorist attack may leave the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant without water for cooling – water for the ZNPP is taken from the Kakhovsky Reservoir,” he noted.
In general, Zelenskyy said, “the devastating ecological, humanitarian, man-made consequences of this single Russian terrorist attack may become such that it will be called a historical catastrophe.”
“According to our information, Russia has already prepared everything to carry out this terrorist attack. Ukrainian workers were thrown out of the Kakhovskaya station – only Russian citizens were there. They have complete control over the station,” the president said.
“An international observation mission is needed at the Kakhovskaya HPP. It is necessary to return Ukrainian personnel there and ensure immediate and professional demining of units and dams. Russia is doing this in order to carry out another operation under a false flag, to carry out a terrorist attack and blame it on Ukraine. But you and I know what is true,” he said.
