Ukraine is looking for an opportunity to talk directly with China and discuss the Russian invasion.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated this in an interview South China Morning Post.

“This is a very strong state. It is a powerful economy… Therefore, it can influence Russia politically and economically. And China is a permanent member of the UN Security Council”– said Zelensky.

“I would like to speak directly. I had one conversation with Xi Jinping a year ago. Since the beginning of the large-scale aggression on February 24, we have officially asked for a conversation, but we have not had any conversations with China, although I think it would be useful.”he added.

Russia asked China for economic help, but Beijing fears sanctions – WPRussia has repeatedly asked China for additional support. The country’s leadership would like to help, but is ready to do so, as long as it does not violate Western sanctions.

The president hoped that China would approach the conflict in a different way, but he would still like to see relations between Ukraine and China develop.

Zelenskyi added that he understood China’s “balanced” attitude to the war, but emphasized that the conflict occurred due to Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

“The Russians are invaders… this is a war on our territory, they came to invade. China, as a big and strong country, can come and put the Russian Federation in a certain place. Of course, I would very much like China to reconsider its attitude towards the Russian Federation.” – he said.

Zelenskyi also believes that China has economic leverage to put pressure on Putin in order to end the war: “This is what China can do – limit trade (with Russia – ed.) until the end of the war”.

It will be recalled that during his speech at the Ukrainian Breakfast in Davos, Zelenskyi said that Ukraine is so far satisfied with the position taken by China regarding the war.

According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine offered China to become one of the security guarantors for Ukraine.

China assured that they would never “attack Ukraine”, but would support it economically and politically.
